The Virginia Beach School Board received information about proposed federal grant applications at its May 12 meeting. For the 2026-27 school year, Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) would receive approximately $18.9 million in formula grant funds through programs authorized under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA) as amended by the Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015 (ESSA).

Now in its 26th year, the Best Communities for Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement for providing music access and education to all students.
Glenwood Elementary opened in 1990 with John S. Kalocay as the first principal. The school colors (blue and orange) and mascot (the gator) are from the University of Florida. Glenwood was the largest elementary school in the state of Virginia with 1,600 students until New Castle Elementary was built in 1999. Currently, Glenwood is the largest elementary school in Virginia Beach and one of the largest in the state of Virginia. A time capsule is buried in the courtyard holding items that were of importance and trendy during the year the school opened.
